The State of Data in UNCW Aquaculture

Abstract

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) Aquaculture programs goal is to develop and transfer to commercial users cost-effective, environmentally sound technologies for marine food production and to mitigate depletion of marine populations through commercial cultivation or stock enhancement. The UNCW program has expressed the need for a more streamlined process in measuring, recording, and analyzing several parameters in their saltwater fish tanks to help with their goals of stock enhancement. The aquaculture facility raises several species of fish including the black sea base at all different lifecycles. Currently, personnel use several different instruments, all with different interfaces, to record data and then manually enter this into spreadsheets. This results in human errors when transcribing accurate measurements. This paper examines current data collection and analysis at the UNCW Aquaculture Facility and explores alternative solutions to the workflow that benefit the facility with more efficient, accurate, and financially viable options.
