Abstract

With the introduction of new summative writing assessments in 30 states, there is a need for schools to be able to have a tool for easily assessing students’ writing achievement and growth throughout the year. A new scale called the Universal Writing Continuum (UWC), originally The Writing Continuum, has been created by Dr. Deborah Powell to access students’ writing based on 10 unique criteria. TheWritingContinuum.com is a web-based application used by teachers, principals, district administrators and parents to score, review, and report on the evaluations of students’ writing submissions. The purpose of this project was to expand the functionality of UWC, document the current capabilities in a comprehensive technology plan, improve the overall user experience and evaluate ideas for future expansion.
